What's Inside
A Nonprofit Partner With Real Impact
The coast redwood and giant sequoia forests are among the most extraordinary ecosystems on Earth. But after decades of logging, fragmentation, and climate-driven wildfires, these landscapes need ongoing care, long-term stewardship, and strategic protection.
Since 1918, Save the Redwoods League (SRL) has been dedicated to protecting and restoring California’s glorious redwood forests.
Their work includes:
Acquiring and permanently protecting land for redwood parks and reserves.
Supporting scientific research and forest restoration to increase ecosystem resilience.
Connecting people with nature, ensuring these ancient forests remain places to explore, learn, and be inspired.
Their efforts ensure these forests continue storing carbon, sheltering wildlife, and inspiring everyone who walks beneath them.

A Case Study: Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion
In June 2025, the League secured a 1,517-acre property near the Russian River in Sonoma County — the “Monte Rio Redwoods Expansion.”
Here are the key highlights:
- The acquisition filled a critical gap, connecting protected forest lands from the Bohemian Highway region all the way to the Pacific coast.
- It includes headwaters of three tributary creeks (Dutch Bill, Freezeout and Willow) that support native salmon and steelhead habitat.
- The property was transferred to Sonoma County Regional Parks for stewardship and public access.
- The project cost $24 million and was supported by multiple partners along with thousands of individual donors.
Thanks to partnerships like yours — when you shop the Endangered Species collection — this kind of land protection becomes possible.
Why Protecting the Redwoods Matters
- They’re irreplaceable forest ecosystems – While coast redwoods can live for more than 2,000 years, less than 5% of the original ancient coast redwood forest remains today.
- Massive carbon-sequestration power – Old-growth redwoods store up to five times more carbon than most other forest types on the planet.
- Biodiversity hubs – From salamanders, ferns and plants up in the canopy to elk and owls on the forest floor, redwood ecosystems host a rich diversity of life.
- Regional heritage – These towering giants are a flagship of Northern California’s natural identity and parklands.
- At risk from mounting threats – Urban development, climate change, increased wildfire intensity, habitat fragmentation and illegal land uses all jeopardize the future of these forests.
When you support Save the Redwoods League, you’re helping safeguard something far bigger than just trees — you’re helping protect a living legacy of wildness, resilience, and nature’s wonder.
Connecting Communities to the Forest: Redwood Rides
One of the most inspiring parts of Save the Redwoods League’s work is its commitment to park equity — making sure everyone, regardless of background or zip code, can experience the wonder of California’s redwood forests. That mission comes to life through Redwood Rides, a program designed to eliminate one of the biggest barriers to outdoor access: transportation.
For many families and youth groups, especially those in underserved or urban communities, getting to a redwood park simply isn’t possible. Redwood Rides bridges that gap by providing free transportation, logistics support, and guided experiences in iconic places like Muir Woods National Monument, Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park, Big Basin Redwoods State Park, and Samuel P. Taylor State Park.
Since launching in 2022, the League has facilitated around 30 rides per year, partnering with community organizations that serve Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) communities as well as low-income families. One recent trip brought 22 youth from the Asian Pacific American Community Center (APACC) in San Francisco to Samuel P. Taylor State Park — a visit filled with exploration, fresh air, and the simple joy of being outdoors together.
These outings aren’t just about the destination. They’re about belonging. Many participants are stepping into a forest for the first time, discovering wildlife, touching moss, and looking up at towering trees older than entire civilizations
Moments like these capture exactly what Redwood Rides aims to create — not just access, but connection.
Research consistently shows the benefits of time in nature: reduced stress, improved mood, and stronger social connections. Redwood Rides helps ensure those benefits reach the communities that need them most. By breaking down barriers and opening doors to the outdoors, the League is helping close the nature gap one bus ride, one trail walk, and one life-changing moment at a time.
